This piece is a study of one of the most astonishing Australian native bees. They have the most unmistakable white markings on the richest black coloured body. Another peculiarity of this species is that they lay their eggs in the nests of other bees. In the case of the Waroona Cuckoo Bee, they tend to prefer blue-banded bees and the teddy-bear bees. The cuckoo bee’s egg hatches first to feed on the builders’ developing larvae.  All these relationships are what fascinates me about nature and they serve as great inspiration for my paintings.
